Know the ‘strains’ of the virus to choose the right protection. The influenza virus that is circulating worldwide can be divided into two major strains: strain A and strain B. In the past, influenza was mainly caused by strain A, which includes A/H1N1 and A/H3N2. However, it has been found that there are more cases of patients infected with strain B of the influenza virus. Therefore, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended the vaccination for influenza prevention in both children and adults, especially in various high-risk groups. It not only helps prevent the disease but also reduces the severity when it occurs.
But why… does it have to be the ‘4-strain influenza vaccine’? Let’s understand first that there are two types of influenza vaccines currently available: the 3-strain influenza vaccine and the 4-strain influenza vaccine. The difference between these two types is that the 4-strain influenza vaccine covers more strains of the virus. The 4 strains that should be protected against in 2022 are:
- Influenza type A, Victoria strain (H1N1)
- Influenza type A, Darwin strain (H3N2)
- Influenza type B, Austria strain
- Influenza type B, Phuket strain
