Eyes are one of the organs that endure heavy strain throughout the day. Especially for office workers who have to work with computer screens regularly, besides the dangers of sunlight and the emitted light from electronic screens, there are some habitual behaviors that we engage in unknowingly, which harm our eyes without us realizing it.
- Screen addiction
According to the data from the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (Public Organization) in 2014, it was found that Thai people spend an average of 7.2 hours per day or nearly one-third of the day in front of electronic screens. The glare from screens has an impact on the health of our eye lenses and optic nerves, which can lead to Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).
We can prevent this by choosing high-resolution screens to reduce strain, maintaining a distance of 20-28 inches between the screen and our eyes, adjusting the brightness of the screen to a comfortable level (neither too bright nor too dark), resting our eyes by looking into the distance or blinking every 20 minutes, changing our body posture to relax our body and eyes, or using computer glasses.
- Insufficient water intake and unhealthy eating
Our body is composed of about 70% water, so it is important to drink an adequate amount of water every day, at least 8 glasses, to meet the body’s needs. Insufficient water intake directly affects the moisture of our eyes, leading to dry eyes, redness, and swollen eyelids. Inadequate consumption of all 5 food groups, especially for those who rarely eat fruits and vegetables, can cause our bodies to lack essential nutrients, which are necessary for the repair and care of our eyes. - Heavy drinking and smoking
Apart from diseases directly related to the liver, digestive system, and respiratory system, numerous studies have indicated that smoking also affects the eye health of individuals. It can lead to cataracts, deteriorated optic nerves, conjunctivitis, dry eyes, and even an increased risk of diabetes-related eye conditions. - Not wearing sunglasses, exposing the eyes to direct UV radiation
We all know how intense the sunlight in Thailand can be. Walking or driving in direct sunlight without wearing sunglasses is equivalent to exposing our eyes directly to UV radiation. This can lead to both corneal and conjunctival inflammation. Therefore, every time we have to go out in the sun or encounter dust and smoke, we should wear sunglasses that can filter out UV-A and UV-B radiation. For general use, lenses with gray or brown tints are most suitable. - Never getting an eye check-up, potentially becoming blind without realizing it
Regular eye check-ups are important and should be done annually or as recommended by ophthalmologists. This helps us identify potential risks or conditions that may cause blindness without showing any noticeable symptoms beforehand. Conditions such as sudden glaucoma attacks are also one of the causes of blindness. Early detection can lead to various treatment options, ensuring that our eyes can see and accompany us for a longer time.
