Many people believe that swelling and bruising occur due to the surgeon’s heavy-handedness or lack of skill. In reality, postoperative swelling and bruising are common occurrences after all types of surgeries because surgery involves injuring the tissues to some extent, and each person’s body responds differently.

Although the surgery itself is over, the postoperative care and recovery process have just begun for those who are about to undergo surgery or have recently undergone surgery and want the wound to heal quickly and recover faster. We have 4 methods to reduce postoperative swelling and bruising to share with you.

1. Cold Compress

Apply a cold compress immediately after the surgery is completed and continue applying it for 48 hours. You can use gel packs or moistened washcloths placed in the freezer or alternate between ice packs wrapped in a cloth. Cold compress helps control bleeding, reduce pain, and swelling of the wound. The coldness applied to the skin also causes the blood vessels to contract. Additionally, it increases blood viscosity, making the blood clot and reducing swelling.

However! ,there are precautions to consider when using a cold compress! If you have undergone nasal or chin augmentation, do not apply the cold compress directly on the silicon implant as it may displace the implant.

2. Elevate the Head

During the first 3-5 days after surgery, if you have undergone nasal surgery, it is advisable to keep your head elevated above heart level to prevent the leakage of fluids from the blood vessels. This helps reduce swelling. When sleeping, use a high pillow or position your head higher than usual.

3. Warm Compress after 1 Week

After one week, switch to warm compresses instead. The heat from warm compresses helps dilate the blood vessels, facilitating the absorption of accumulated fluids in the swollen tissues. Moreover, heat promotes the dissipation of coagulated blood, leading to faster resolution of internal bruising. However, be cautious not to apply excessive heat as it may cause skin burns. Also, observe if the swelling worsens after applying warm compresses, in which case you should stop immediately.

4. Diet to Reduce Swelling

Taking care of yourself is not just about self-care but also about nutrition. After surgery, try consuming foods such as pumpkins, seaweed, water spinach, or black beans. These foods are rich in various beneficial substances. They contain vitamin A, which helps prevent infection after surgery and eliminates toxins and foreign substances. They also contain minerals, dietary fiber, and iron, which help regulate body temperature, reduce swelling and bruising, nourish blood, eliminate toxins, and prevent infection.

If you don’t want your face to remain swollen or bruised for long after surgery, try applying these methods. Wanting to be beautiful alone is not enough; you must also have discipline in taking care of yourself.
