What is ovulation?

Ovulation is a natural mechanism in the reproductive system of women during their fertile years, which occurs every month until menopause. It typically happens in a cycle of approximately 28-35 days, starting from the first day of menstruation in that particular cycle. The day of ovulation is when the mature egg is released from the ovarian follicle and travels down the fallopian tube.

There is only one instance of ovulation per menstrual cycle, providing an opportunity for conception. The specific day of ovulation varies from person to person, depending on their menstrual cycle. Normally, once the egg is released, it can survive in the fallopian tube for about 12-24 hours. If there is sexual intercourse or fertilization during this period, the fertilized egg implants itself into the uterine lining, resulting in pregnancy. However, if the egg is not fertilized or there is no successful conception, menstruation occurs approximately 14 days later, indicating a regular menstrual cycle.

Even if sexual intercourse does not align precisely with the day of ovulation, once the fertilized egg implants in the uterus, it can survive for another 48-72 hours. Hence, if intercourse occurs 1-2 days before ovulation, there is still a chance of pregnancy. However, after the ovulation day has passed, the chances of conception decrease because the egg has a shorter lifespan.

Determining the day of ovulation accurately to increase the chances of pregnancy:

Normally, the calculation of the ovulation day spans approximately two weeks before the onset of the next menstrual period. This method of counting the ovulation day accurately applies to women with regular menstrual cycles. For example, if the menstrual cycle occurs every 28 days, the ovulation day will be around the 14th day of the cycle (counting from the first day of the period as Day 1)

Once the ovulation day is identified, sexual intercourse can occur approximately 2 days before the expected day of ovulation. In simpler terms, starting from the 12th day of the cycle because the fertilized egg can live for about 2 days before ovulation.

Apart from tracking the menstrual cycle, the observation of cervical mucus can also indicate the occurrence of ovulation. When the egg is released, there will be clear and slippery cervical mucus. This period is considered the most fertile time and can be referred to as the golden minutes for those who desire to conceive.

Irregular menstrual periods should be consulted with a physician:

For individuals experiencing irregular menstrual periods, whether they occur or not, it is advisable to seek medical advice to determine the cause. Menstrual irregularities can be caused by various factors or underlying medical conditions. It not only affects fertility but can also be harmful if left undiagnosed and untreated.
